Every April, as the sun crosses from Pisces into Aries, the air along India's lush Tulunad coast changes. The sea breeze carries the scent of jackfruit blossoms, temple incense, and freshly cut paddy. In the Tulu-speaking heartland of coastal western India — a region called Tulunad — families wake before dawn, light clay lamps, and arrange an ancient tableau of abundance. The Tulu New Year, Bisu Parba, has arrived.

One of India's richest yet lesser-known new year celebrations, Bisu Parba is far more than a date on a calendar. It is a living philosophy: a covenant between people, their land, and the cosmos — renewed every spring.

What Is Bisu Parba?

Bisu Parba (also written Bisu Habba or simply Bisu) is the new year and harvest festival of the Tuluva people. Parba means festival in Tulu, and Bisu refers to the auspicious day itself. It marks the first day of Paggu, the opening month of the Tulu lunisolar calendar, and falls on April 14 or 15 each year in the Gregorian calendar — the same day as Vishu in Kerala, Vaisakhi in Punjab, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, and Pohela Boishakh in Bengal. India, it turns out, celebrates many new years, and they almost all arrive together.

The calendrical anchor is Mesha Sankranti — the sun's entry into the zodiac sign of Aries. This solar event signals the transition from the cold, dry season to the warmth of spring, and for farming communities, it marks the moment the earth is ready to be sown again.

The Heart of Bisu: The Kani

The most sacred act of Bisu morning is the preparation and viewing of the Bisu Kani — an arrangement of auspicious objects laid out on a banana leaf or wooden plank, placed before the household deity or in the main hall.

The eldest member of the house rises before sunrise to assemble the Kani. The arrangement includes a pot of water, a cup of rice, two betel leaves, a semi-dehusked coconut (with its muganda), a bunch of fragrant Jungle Geranium flowers (called Kepula Poo in Tulu), a stick of sandalwood, gold ornaments, a mirror, and an abundance of fresh produce — brinjal, cucumber, pumpkin, ivy gourd, jackfruit, mango, cashew apples, bananas, coconut, and areca nut. Everything the land has yielded is represented.

A lamp is lit at both ends of the arrangement, and the household gathers to pray and prostrate before the Kani. The idea is simple and profound: the first thing your eyes behold on New Year's morning should be plenty. What you see first sets the tone for the year ahead.

After prayers, the eldest member places the Kani on the rooftop — displaying the household's gratitude to the skies, and perhaps its hopes, visible to the whole neighbourhood.

The Rituals of Renewal

🪔 Kani Dipuna

The act of lighting the lamp and arranging all sacred objects on the banana leaf — the ceremonial heart of the morning that opens the household to blessings.

🌱 Enelu Besaam

The sowing ritual. New paddy seeds are set aside in the morning, and in the evening a symbolic first sowing takes place in the field, marking the agricultural new year.

🙏 Kai Bith Padunu

\"Laying hands\" — young ones touch the feet of elders to receive blessings. Elders in turn give Bisu Kaineettam: coins or gifts as tokens of shared prosperity.

🥥 Coconut Breaking

A playful folk game where two players knock their coconuts together. Whoever's coconut cracks is the loser — the cracked coconut is called OtTetārai, the uncracked one BaNTatārai.

Tenants who farm leased land use this day to visit the landowner, bringing freshly harvested vegetables and fruits, and seeking renewed permission to cultivate the following year. The relationship between farmer and land, tenant and owner, is reaffirmed on Bisu morning — not through paperwork, but through produce and presence.

The Feast: Tasting the New Year

No Tulu festival is complete without an elaborate spread, and Bisu Parba is a culinary event in its own right. The morning meal centres on traditional dishes that are both nourishing and symbolic:

Tulunadu is a remarkable cultural pocket. The Tulu language, spoken by roughly 2 million people in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and the Kasaragod district of Kerala, is one of the oldest Dravidian tongues, with a literary history stretching back over a thousand years. Yet Tulu has never been included in India's Eighth Schedule of official languages — a long-standing grievance among its speakers.

The region's cultural practices are uniquely layered. Bhoota Kola — the elaborate spirit worship ceremony performed annually in villages — is perhaps Tulunadu's most distinctive tradition. Nature deities, ancestor spirits, and local folk heroes are honoured through night-long rituals of music, dance, and trance. Bisu Parba and Bhoota Kola share the same animist DNA: both arise from a worldview in which the land is alive, the seasons are sacred, and human beings are participants in a much older conversation.

Every April, Tulu Instagram accounts overflow with photographs of Bisu Kani arrangements — mango leaves, golden ornaments, mountains of fresh vegetables catching the morning light. What was once a quiet domestic ritual has found a new kind of visibility, drawing interest from people far beyond the community.
