Chennu Nalike

People of mera community involves themsebes in dance for 5,7 or 9 days in between full moon days of mayi and suggi. This traditional dance form is known as Channu / Chennu nalike. In this dance form both boys and girls dance together but normally boys play Chennu’s role by wearing sari, bangles and anklets. In this dance form Chennu holds a doll resembling a child and nurture it while other dancers dance around Chennu by screaming. After completion 9 days of dance, they offer food in Winnowing pan, and they dance around it too. Later they place this food on a stone then they keep their costumes near tree and come back.

Background :
Chennu nalike is a dance form based on a girl called Dharane. Song of chennu nalke gives a clear picture that Dharane was the daughter of Babbu of kote. Since there was no one to take care of Dharane, she was more like an orphan, then a man form bunt community Monta Kadpana Dekkulu started to look after her, one day she went to take bath in the river but comes back as pregnant meantime villagers started to doubt about Monta Kadpana Dekkulu. She proved them wrong and attained daivatva in memory of her Chennu nalike was started.
